What you can actually eat here

Most restaurants answer "do you have gluten-free options?" with a salad. This is the real list.

Marked gluten-free on our menu

  • Steak Tips GF

Sauteed with bacon, wine, garlic, Cajun seasoning and bleu cheese crumbles. The appetizer most people don't expect to be gluten-free.

  • Eggplant Dip GF

Roasted eggplant, coriander and cream cheese blend, scallions, feta, served with sweet potato chips.

  • Italian Zoodles GF

Zucchini noodles instead of pasta, with tomato, pesto, artichokes, garlic and parmesan. Add chicken, shrimp or blackened salmon.

  • Portobella Stack GF

Marinated portobella, zucchini and roasted red peppers over mashed potatoes with balsamic and chive oil.

Steaks, chops and entrees

Our steaks are seasoned and grilled, not floured or breaded, so the cut itself is gluten-free, the thing to watch is what comes with it. Order a petite filet, garlic butter sirloin, ribeye, New York strip or the Moroccan spiced lamb chops with a gluten-free side and tell your server you need it gluten-free. Every steak comes with a house salad, a cup of soup or a cup of chili; the house salad is the safe pick there. See our steaks and chops for the full lineup.

Burgers, with two swaps

Any hand-pattied burger can be made with a gluten-free lettuce bun and gluten-free fries. That covers all eleven builds, cheeseburger, lamb burger, gouda jalapeno, cowboy classic, pico avocado, black bleu and peppadew, steakhouse mushroom swiss, the Erock, shiitake, and the bison Ridge Rider Tatanka Warrior. You can swap any of them to a bison patty too. Full list on any burger on the menu.

Sides, this is the useful part

All of our sides are gluten-free except the french fries, and the fries can be made gluten-free by request. So: sweet potato chips, fresh fruit cup, basmati rice, broccoli and cheese, butter braised broccolini, truffle mashed potatoes, baked potato, baked yam with honey butter. Baked potatoes and yams are available after 5 PM. Side substitutions beyond fries or sweet potato chips are +$1.25.

Salads

House salad, Sherry Berry, Cobb, beet salad and the classic Greek are all built without gluten-containing ingredients, ask your server about dressings and we'll confirm at the table. Add chicken, steak, shrimp, blackened ahi or blackened salmon.

About our kitchen: the honest answer on cross-contamination

Here is what our menu says, word for word: "All items are prepared in one kitchen. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free items are subject to possible cross-contamination."

We'd rather tell you that up front than let you find out afterward. We are not a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. One kitchen, shared surfaces, shared prep space. We take gluten-free orders seriously, the ticket is marked, and the line knows what to change, but we can't tell you there is zero risk of contact, because that wouldn't be true.

If you have celiac disease, that distinction matters, and you're the best judge of your own tolerance. Tell your server when you order, not after. Ask us anything about a specific dish and we'll go check rather than guess.

Editor note, resolve before launch

Do we have a dedicated gluten-free fryer, or are the gluten-free fries cooked in shared oil? This is the single most important fact on this page, celiac guests will decide whether to come based on the answer. Please give the exact truth and we'll publish it exactly.

Editor note, resolve before launch

What does the kitchen do differently when a ticket comes in marked celiac, separate pan, glove change, clean board, separate prep area? Listing two to three concrete steps here is far more persuasive than any adjective.

How to order gluten-free

  1. Say it when you sit down, not when the food arrives. It gets written on the ticket and follows the order into the kitchen.
  2. Say how strict you need it. "Celiac" and "avoiding gluten" get handled differently, and knowing which one you are helps us give you a straight answer.
  3. Ask for the swaps by name, gluten-free lettuce bun, gluten-free fries, a gluten-free side instead of fries.
  4. Ask about the dish you actually want. Sauces, glazes and dressings are where gluten usually hides. Our menu changes often, so the current answer is the one your server has.

Gluten-free beer and drinks

We keep Lakefront New Grist Pilsner and Lakefront New Grist IPA, both gluten-free, so you're not stuck with a soda while everyone else works through the seventeen rotating drafts.

Beyond beer: our cocktails lean on spirits, fresh citrus and house-made mixers, including our own grenadine, bitters and michelada mix. If you skip alcohol as well, there are two mocktails, the Bowl Cut and the Scratch Shirley, plus a long non-alcoholic beer list. More on gluten-free beer on tap and in bottles.

Editor note, resolve before launch

Any cocktails we should flag as containing gluten, anything topped with a draft beer, e.g. The Handlebar and the Spaghett, should probably be called out here.

Other allergies and diets

Peanuts, read this one

THE WILSON burger contains creamy peanut butter. It's gouda, bacon, spiced tomato jam and peanut butter, and it's one of our most ordered burgers. If anyone at your table has a peanut allergy, tell your server so we can keep it away from your food.

Vegetarian and vegan. There's real overlap between gluten-free and plant-based diners, and several of our gluten-free plates are also meat-free, the Italian Zoodles, the Portobella Stack and the Eggplant Dip. The full rundown, marked honestly for what's vegan versus vegetarian, is on our vegetarian and vegan options page.

Dairy. A lot of our kitchen runs on cheese and cream, goat cheese, gorgonzola, feta, cream sauces, truffle mashed potatoes. Dairy-free is possible but it narrows the menu, so ask your server which plates work that night. Grilled steaks and chops with rice or a plain baked potato are usually the easiest starting point.

Nuts. Beyond the peanut butter on The Wilson, pistachios appear on the Sherry Berry salad. Tell us the allergy and we'll tell you what to avoid.

Any other allergens worth naming up front, sesame, shellfish handling, soy in the teriyaki or wasabi aioli?

Eating gluten-free in the Black Hills

Traveling gluten-free through this part of South Dakota is harder than it should be. A lot of the region's food is fried, breaded, or comes out of a chain kitchen where nobody can answer a specific question. If you've spent a trip eating from a cooler in the back of the car, you know the pattern.

We're in downtown Spearfish, right off I-90, which makes us a straightforward stop between Rapid City and Devils Tower, or on the way to and from Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood and Sturgis. Sturgis is about twenty minutes east. Deadwood and Lead are twenty to twenty-five minutes south. Spearfish Canyon starts at the south edge of town.

It also means you're not sending the rest of your table somewhere else. One kitchen that does gluten-free entrees, bison burgers, salmon and halibut, plus vegetarian plates and two gluten-free beers, is usually easier than negotiating with four people about where to eat.

Hours, takeout and practical stuff

We open at 11 AM every day of the week. Monday through Thursday and Sunday we're open until 10 PM; Friday and Saturday until 11 PM. Walk-ins are welcome, and we take call-ahead orders at (605) 717-1255, worth doing if you want the kitchen to have your gluten-free notes before you arrive.

Parties of 8 or more are subject to an automatic 18% gratuity. Takeout is available; if you're ordering gluten-free to go, say so on the phone so it's on the ticket from the start.

Editor note, resolve before launch

Do we take reservations, and is there a wait on Friday and Saturday nights worth warning people about? Also confirm parking details for the Jackson Blvd location.

Frequently asked questions

Does Killian's have gluten-free options?

Yes, several. Steak Tips, Eggplant Dip, Italian Zoodles and the Portobella Stack are marked gluten-free on our menu, our steaks and chops work with a gluten-free side, and any burger can be ordered with a gluten-free lettuce bun and gluten-free fries. We also carry two gluten-free beers.

Do you have gluten-free buns?

We serve burgers on a gluten-free lettuce bun rather than a gluten-free bread bun, and it works on any of our eleven hand-pattied builds. Ask for it when you order. You can also add gluten-free fries, or swap to one of our gluten-free sides instead.

Are your fries gluten-free?

Our house-cut french fries can be made gluten-free by request, just tell your server. Every other side we serve is gluten-free as it comes: sweet potato chips, basmati rice, broccoli and cheese, butter braised broccolini, truffle mashed potatoes, fresh fruit, baked potato and baked yam.

Do you have a dedicated fryer?

What we can tell you now is that all our items are prepared in one kitchen, and gluten-free items are subject to possible cross-contamination.

Editor note, resolve before launch

Dedicated GF fryer status: yes or no, needs owner confirmation before publishing.

Is Killian's celiac-friendly?

We cook gluten-free food carefully but we are not a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. Our menu states it plainly: all items are prepared in one kitchen, and gluten-free items are subject to possible cross-contamination. Tell your server you have celiac disease and we'll tell you exactly what we can and can't guarantee.

Which entrees are gluten-free?

Italian Zoodles and the Portobella Stack are marked gluten-free on the menu. Our steaks, petite filet, garlic butter sirloin, ribeye, New York strip, and the Moroccan spiced lamb chops work gluten-free with an appropriate side. Salads and the Steak Tips appetizer round out the list.

Can steaks be made gluten-free?

Yes. Our steaks are seasoned and grilled rather than breaded or floured, so the main thing to change is what's on the plate beside them. Choose a gluten-free side, take the house salad rather than the soup, and tell your server it needs to be gluten-free.

Do you have gluten-free beer?

Yes, Lakefront New Grist Pilsner and Lakefront New Grist IPA, both gluten-free, alongside seventeen rotating drafts. If you're skipping alcohol too, we pour two house mocktails and carry a long non-alcoholic beer list.

Do you have vegan and vegetarian options as well?

Yes, and several overlap with the gluten-free list, the Italian Zoodles, Portobella Stack and Eggplant Dip are all meat-free. We also serve a house-made black bean patty that can go on any burger. See our vegetarian and vegan page for what's vegan versus vegetarian.

Ask before you drive over

If you've got a question about a specific dish, call us, it's faster than reading a menu and guessing. We'd rather answer it before you drive over.
