Why eat in Spearfish instead of Sturgis

This isn't a knock on Sturgis. It's arithmetic.

During Rally week, Sturgis has more people in it than its restaurants can seat, by an enormous multiple. You will wait. You will eat standing up, off a paper tray, in the sun, next to a generator. That's part of the experience once. It is not what you want on day four.

Spearfish is 20 minutes west on I-90. Same interstate, no detour, and it's the direction a huge share of Rally lodging is anyway. What you get for those 20 minutes:

• An actual table. Indoors, with a chair, a server and air conditioning.
• A real kitchen. Not a fryer under a tent. Scratch cooking, steaks, bison, seafood.
• Parking you can find. Downtown Spearfish parking during Rally week is busier than usual and still nothing like Sturgis.
• Bathrooms with plumbing.
• A drink that took more than four seconds to make, or a good non-alcoholic one, since you're riding back.

Spearfish gets busy during Rally week. Everything within 50 miles does. But busy in Spearfish means a wait; busy in Sturgis means a crowd.

Getting between Spearfish and Sturgis

Straight shot on I-90, roughly 20 minutes in normal conditions, all interstate. Spearfish is Exit 10/12/14; Sturgis is Exit 30/32.

Adjust your expectations during Rally week:

• Traffic is heavy on I-90 and heavier on the surface roads near Sturgis, especially late afternoon and evening. Add time.
• Ride defensively even by Rally standards. The interstate is full of riders, out-of-state drivers, RVs and trailers, all watching the scenery.
• Weather changes fast in the Black Hills in August. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and can be violent. Have a plan for pulling off.
• Getting out of Sturgis in the evening takes longer than getting in. If you're heading to Spearfish for dinner, leaving before the evening surge is worth 30 minutes of your life.

If you have a spare afternoon, Spearfish Canyon starts at the south edge of Spearfish and is one of the best rides in the region, 20 miles of paved two-lane through a limestone canyon, and far less congested than the Needles. There's more on the rest of the town too.

Rally week at Killian's

We're at 539 W Jackson Blvd, steps from downtown Spearfish, open every day at 11 AM. We've been here since 2012, the same place the locals eat in February, not a pop-up that appears for Rally week.

What we can say without checking anything:

• Open 11 AM every day. Close 10 PM Sunday-Thursday, 11 PM Friday-Saturday.
• Lunch is the easy window. If your day's ride puts you back through Spearfish around midday, that's the least-crowded time all week.
• Parties of 8 or more are subject to an automatic 18% gratuity. Call ahead at (605) 717-1255 if you're rolling in with a group.
• We're open before and after Rally week too, and honestly, the week either side is the nicer time to eat here.

What to order after a day of riding

Eight hours on a bike in August does specific things to a person. Here's what actually helps.

If you're wrung out and want protein: a steak. Petite filet, garlic butter sirloin, USDA Choice-or-higher ribeye, espresso-rubbed New York strip with crimini mushroom cream, or Moroccan spiced lamb chops. Every steak comes with a house salad, a cup of soup, or a cup of house-made black bean bison chili included, which matters when you haven't eaten properly since breakfast.

If you want something you can't get at home: bison and elk. The Bison Short Ribs, Moroccan-spiced and braised, on truffle mashed potatoes. The Dakota Meatloaf, made from Rocky Mountain elk and bison with spiced tomato jam. The Ridge Rider Tatanka Warrior, a bison burger with candied bacon, jalapeños and cheddar. You rode a long way to be in the Black Hills; eat something from here.

If you want a burger and no thinking: the burger list is hand-pattied and charbroiled, and any of them can be swapped to a bison patty, a chicken breast or a bean patty, with a gluten-free bun and gluten-free fries by request.

If you're just hot and hungry: carne asada fries, bison chili cheese fries, classic poutine, or wings three ways, buffalo with gorgonzola, Moroccan dry rub, or Caesar and parmesan.

To drink. 17 rotating drafts including Crow Peak, brewed here in Spearfish, plus Lost Cabin, Sawyer and Black Tooth from around the region. A cocktail list with house-made grenadine and bitters and two barrel-aged drinks, a Barrelled-in-Bond Old Fashioned and a Verde Y Reposado. 30-plus whiskeys and bourbons.

And if you're riding back: the non-alcoholic list is real, not an afterthought, Guinness N/A, Athletic Upside Dawn, Deschutes and Surly N/A, Lagunitas Hop Refresher, plus two mocktails made from the same house syrups as everything else. Get in early enough and check happy hour; check live music for what's on that night.

Where else to eat in Spearfish

We'd rather you eat well in Spearfish than badly in Sturgis, so here's the honest list.

Downtown Spearfish has more good options than a town of this size should. Crow Peak Brewing is the local brewery, brewed in Spearfish, and the taproom is a genuinely good stop for a beer even if you eat elsewhere. There's a solid breakfast scene along and near Main Street, which matters more than dinner when you're getting up early to ride. There are a couple of long-running local bars and grills, a good coffee roaster, and the usual chain options out by the interstate exits if you want fast and predictable at 9 PM.

A practical Rally-week tip regardless of where you eat: go early or go late. Between 6 and 8 PM, every restaurant in the northern Black Hills is at capacity. At 4:30 or 8:45 you'll walk in almost anywhere.

Practicalities

• Book lodging months ahead. Spearfish fills up for Rally week like everywhere else in the region. If you're reading this in spring and haven't booked, book.
• Riding gear is fine at dinner. Boots, leathers, dust, nobody here cares.
• Cash and card both work, but service can be slow when everything's slammed. Be patient with people who are working 14-hour days.
• Weather. August afternoons in the Hills can produce hail and hard rain with very little warning. Check before a long ride.
• Groups. Parties of 8 or more get an automatic 18% gratuity. Call (605) 717-1255 ahead.
• The week after is beautiful. If your schedule is flexible, staying an extra two or three days past the Rally gets you the same roads with none of the traffic.
